Auden

                             October 1st, l973.

Dear Mr. Kallman,

Dr. Kraus being absent from Vienna the sad task
falls upon me to express our sincerest sympathies to you.
It would be vain to try and find words of comfort, all we
can do is say that we felel with you.

I just want to add that the lecture on Friday went
very well indeed.  Mr. Auden seemed to enjoy himself, and
the public responded enthusiastically.  He closed with the
two funny four-liners on Goethe and Kant, and the applause
turned into a delighted ovation.  In our sorrow we are
glad to think that there was a llast occasion where people
could show him how deeply they appreciated his art, but
also how fond they were of him.

                            CSincerely yours,

                           (Hella Bronold)
