Sehr geehrte Frau Busta,

Ich wollte Sie heute Abend nicht
aufhalten. Sie hätten sich wahrscheinlich nicht
an mich erinnert _ vor drei, vier Jahren
habe ich Sie im Caféhaus "Drei viertel"
"interviewed"; und doch möchte ich mich
für die Freude, die sich Sie mir heute gemacht
haben, bedanken.

Dieser Brief hat aber einen weiteren Grund.
Professor Auden begrüsste Sie _ und verschwand.
Er ist ein erstaunlich bescheidener Mensch
und verabscheut es, sich _ auch im kleinsten
Dorf - irgendwie bemerkbar zu machen. Ich
wollte Ihnen daher sagen, daß er gleich
darauf und auch beim Abendessen sehr
anerkennende Worte über Ihre Dichtung
gesprochen hat. Wenn Sie erlauben: auch
Ihr Wesen, und die Art, wie Sie vorlesen,
si[]tnd ihm sehr sympathisch .

Sein Freund und Mitarbeiter Chester
Kallman, war auch dar. Er ist ebenfalls
Dichter, vor allem Librettist (Stravinsky,
Henze, Brecht u.s.w.) Er versteht zu wenig
Deutsch, es hat mich aber interessiert,

daß er imstande war, von der Technik
Ihrer Dichtung eine Menge herauszuhören
die der Laie, wenn er nur für den Inhalt
Ohren hat, oft überhört .

Übrigens: warum wohl niemand dienachden
"Hinterhöfen" applaudiert hat? Eins Ihrer
Schönsten Gedichten, hat es etwas
(ärgern Sie sich nicht) Hofmannsthalsches
an sich.

Sehr geehrte Frau Busta, ich werde diesen
Brief sofort beenden, es ist ohnehin schon
halb eins! Halten Sie diesen Brief
bitte nicht für irgend eine Art von
Wichtigtuerei, ich wollte nur Audens
Lob weiterreichen.
